coalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 col（石炭・木炭） をそのまま受け継いだ語。もとは燃えさしの「おき・木炭」も指し、charcoal（木炭）にその意味が残っている。
さかのぼると *ǵwelH-（燃える・輝く） で、赤く燃えて光る炭のイメージがそのまま名前になっている。coal は「赤く燃えるかたまり」と思えばよい。
coal mine（炭鉱）・coal-fired（石炭火力の）のように産業語として頻出。rake over old coals（過ぎた話を蒸し返す）も、燃え残りの炭をかき回す絵から来た表現である。
