ギリシャ語 ἀνθρᾰκῖτῐς（石炭のような石）= ᾰ̓́νθρᾰξ（炭・石炭）+ -ῑ́της（そこに属するものの名をつくる）。
炭素の割合が最も高く、煙をほとんど出さずに燃える最上質の石炭が anthracite（無煙炭）。-ite は鉱物名の定番の語尾（graphite, magnetite, hematite）なので、「〜石」と読めばよい。
同じ ᾰ̓́νθρᾰξ（炭）から来ているのが anthrax（炭疽）。皮膚に炭のような黒い痂皮ができることからの名で、「炭」つながりで二語まとめて覚えられる。
