cohe はラテン語 cohaereō（互いにくっついて離れない）で、sion がその状態を名詞にする。ばらばらになりうるものが引き合って一つの塊でいること、それが「結束・凝集」だ。
物理では分子どうしが引き合う「凝集力」、社会については social cohesion（社会の結束）、文章については話のつながりを指す。
後半の haereō が「くっつく」で、adhesive（接着剤）にも通じる。cohere（まとまる）・coherent（首尾一貫した）と並べて覚えるとよい。
