覚え方
compel（強いる）+ -ing。もともとは「（人を）そうせずにいられなくさせる」側の性質を表す語で、力ずくの強制ではなく「引き込まれて抗えない」ほうに意味が寄った。
a compelling story（引き込まれる話）、compelling evidence（反論しがたい証拠）、a compelling reason（やむにやまれぬ理由）のように、「読み手・聞き手の心を否応なく動かす」ときに使う。
同じ流れに compulsion（衝動）・compulsory（必修の）があるが、こちらは強制の色が濃い。compelling は「強いられるほど惹きつけられる」と押さえるとよい。
