古英語 crēopan は「腹ばい・四つんばいでゆっくり前進する」という動きを表し、這って前進する *grewbʰ- につながる。体を地面や物の表面近くに保ち、立ち上がらずに進むのが基本のイメージである。
そこから creep は「忍び寄る・這い寄る」になり、物理的にゆっくり近づく場合だけでなく、不安や不快感が少しずつ広がる場合にも使われる。crept はその過去形で、低い姿勢で、音を立てず、じわじわ進むと覚えるとよい。
