eschatonの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ギリシャ語 ἔσχᾰτος の中性形 ἔσχᾰτον がそのまま英語に入った語で、キリスト教神学では歴史の最終局面、世の終わりそのものを指す。
同じ語から出た eschatology は「終末論」、eschatological は「終末論的な」で、神学の用語としてはこちらの方がよく使われる。
哲学や文芸批評でも、物事が行き着く最終地点を指して比喩的に用いられる。定冠詞を付けて the eschaton と言うのが普通。
