中世ラテン語 galeria（回廊・通路）から来た語で、もともとは建物の細長い通路や、そこに沿った場所を指した。通路の壁に作品を並べる空間から「美術館・画廊」へ、また上階の細長い客席から「客席の最上段・バルコニー」へ意味が広がった。

gallery を「通路のように作品や観客が並ぶ場所」と捉えると、美術品を展示する gallery と、劇場の上段席を指す gallery が同じ語であることを覚えやすい。
