headingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
head（頭）+ -ing（動詞から名詞的な形を作る） で「頭に置くもの」。文章や表の一番上、つまり「頭」に掲げる短い題が heading である。
head の背後は *kap-（頭／鉢・杯） で、体の頭から「先端・上部・いちばん大事な部分」へ広がる語感を持つ。だから heading は本文に先立って内容を示す小見出しを指し、文書では chapter heading、section heading のように階層を作る。
航空・航海では「進む方向」を heading と呼ぶが、これも「船首・機首が向いている先」という同じ発想。*kap- の仲間には captain（頭に立つ人）、chief（かしら）、chapter（章）、cap（頭にかぶるもの）があり、cap/chief/head は「あたま」とまとめて読める。
