headlineの語源と覚え方
覚え方
head（頭）+ line（線・行） で「紙面の頭の行」。記事の先頭に大きく掲げられる一行、すなわち新聞の見出しである。
head の背後にある *kap-（頭／鉢・杯） は「先端・いちばん上」の感覚を担う。見出しは一目で目を引く必要があるため、hit the headlines / make headlines（大きく報道される）のように「世間の注目を集める」ことの言い換えとしても使われる。
そこから、催しで一番大きく名前が出る主役を headliner、その主役を務めることを headline the festival と動詞で表すようになった。*kap- の仲間の captain、chief、chapter と並べると、「頭＝先頭・最重要」という筋が通って見える。
