newspaperの語源と覚え方

news（新しい情報・報道）+ paper（紙）。「新しい知らせを載せた紙」というそのままの合成語で、日本語の「新聞」とほぼ同じ発想である。
news は *new-（新しい）の系統。紙媒体を前提にした語なので、電子版は online newspaper や digital edition と補うことが多い。a daily newspaper（日刊紙）、a newspaper article（新聞記事）。
同じ作りに newsletter（会報）・newsstand（新聞売り場）・newsroom（報道部）がある。news- は「時事の情報」、後半が媒体や場所と読めば意味が取れる。
