ラテン語 prōductus（前に導かれた）は、**前へ進む per-（前に・通り抜ける）+ 引く・導く dewk- というイメージで捉えられる。前へ導き出されたものが「生み出されたもの」になり、そこから product（製品・結果）を表すようになった。
製造によって前へ出てきた品物が product（製品）で、行為から前へ出てきた成果も product（結果）である。produce（生産する）・production（生産）・productivity（生産性）は同族語で、duct を見たら「導く」、pro- を見たら「前へ」と読むと覚えやすい。
