ラテン語 crāticula（小さな籠・鉄格子）= crātis（柳細工・藁束）+ -culus（小ささを表す指小辞）。細い素材を組み合わせたcrātisに、-culusを加えて「小さく組まれたもの、細かな格子」を表した。
この「棒や線を規則正しく組んだ網目」のイメージが、英語 grid の「格子状の網」へつながり、現在では表計算の区画や電力網のような、規則的に区切られた仕組みにも使われる。grid は線を組んだ網目と覚えれば、格子とネットワークの両方の意味をつかめる。
