覚え方
中英語 grocerye = grocer（食料品を売る人）+ -ia（抽象名詞を作る語尾）。もとは「食料雑貨商の商い」を表す語だった。
商売を指す語が、扱う品物そのもの（groceries＝食料雑貨）を指すようになり、さらにそれを売る店へと広がった。米語では grocery だけで店を指し、grocery store・grocery shopping の形も普通に使う。
売り手の grocer は今も「食料品店主」。商売の名がそのまま店を指すようになる例は bakery（パン屋）も同じで、-y で終わる語尾がその働きをしている。
