honey(蜂蜜)+ dew(露)で「蜜の露」。植物の葉に付く甘い粘液や、甘い露を指す語だった。
今いちばんよく使うのは honeydew melon の略で、皮が白緑色で果肉が甘いメロンのこと。その甘さを蜜の露になぞらえた名前。
dew の先には「煙・靄」を意味する *dʰewh₂- があり、空気中の水気が立ちのぼるイメージとつながっている。
