infrared は infra-（〜の下、下部に）+ red（赤い） という組み合わせ。可視光線の赤より「下側」にある領域を指す名前で、目に見える赤色そのものではなく、赤の外側に位置する放射線を表す。
red の背後には h₁rewdʰ-（赤い・紅茶色の） という色の要素がある。infra- は位置関係、red は色を示すので、infrared は「赤の下側にあるもの」→「赤外線の」と分解すれば、ultraviolet（紫外線の）などとの対比もつかみやすい。
