in-（内に）+ land（陸地）で「内陸」。古英語にすでに inland の形があり、綴りも中身もほぼそのまま続いている。
land の先には「土地・原野」を意味する *lendʰ- があり、lawn（開けた草地）も同じ系統。
名詞では海から離れた内陸部、形容詞では「内陸の」、go inland のように副詞にもなる。イギリスの国税庁が Inland Revenue と呼ばれたのは、国内から上がる収入という意味。
