landingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
land（陸地・着陸する）+ -ing（動作を表す名詞を作る）。「陸に着けること」がそのまま「着陸・着地・上陸」になった。
飛行機なら a smooth landing（滑らかな着陸）・crash landing（不時着）・emergency landing（緊急着陸）、装置は landing gear（着陸装置）。船なら上陸で、landing craft は上陸用舟艇。
もうひとつの「踊り場」も同じ発想で、階段の途中で足を着ける平らな場所のこと。on the landing（踊り場で）のように使う。「上陸地点＝一区切りの平地」と考えると、二つの意味が一本につながる。
