landlord は land（陸地・土地）+ lord（家主・領主）。古い形 landhlāford は、land（陸地・国・地域）+ hlāford（家庭または領地の男性家長） という組み立てで、「土地を管理する家長・領主」を表した。
その意味が現代の「土地や建物を所有し、貸し出す人」へ受け継がれ、landlord は「家主・大家」になった。land を見たら『土地』、lord を見たら『それを治める人』 と覚えるとよい。landmark・inland・mainland など、land を含む語も「土地」を中心に意味を組み立てられる。
