lee(風下・風を避ける場所)+ -ward(方向を表す)。-ward の背後は *wert-(向きを変える) で、「その方へ向いた」を表す接尾辞。toward・backward・homeward と同じ作りである。
船と航海の語で、風が吹いていく側=風下を指す。反対は windward(風上)。風上側は波と風を正面から受け、風下側は船体や島の陰になって穏やかなので、the leeward side は避難や停泊に適した側を意味する。カリブ海の Leeward Islands はこの語がそのまま地名になった例。
補足: 海事の伝統的な発音では「リーワード」ではなく「ルーアド」に近く読む習慣がある。lee 単独でも「風を避ける陰」を指し、in the lee of the hill(丘の陰で)のように使う。
