覚え方
liter はラテン語 littera（文字・手紙）、ture は行為やその結果を表す語尾。合わせた litterātūra は、もともと「文字を書くこと・文字の知識」を指した。
そこから、書かれた文章の集まり、さらに小説・詩・劇などの作品全体を指す「文学」へ広がった。ある分野の文献の束を literature と呼ぶ用法（the literature on this topic＝この分野の先行研究）も、同じ「書かれたもの」から。liter の仲間は letter・literacy（読み書きの力）である。
