覚え方
letter（手紙・文字）+ head（頭・先頭） で「手紙の頭」。letter はラテン語 littera（文字）から来ていて、文字→文字で書いたもの→手紙と意味が広がった。便箋のいちばん上に会社名・ロゴ・住所・電話番号が印刷された部分、またその便箋を letterhead という。
Please print the contract on company letterhead.（契約書は会社のレターヘッド入り用紙に印刷してください）のように、正式な書類の場面で使う。heading（見出し）と同じく、head は「上の端・先頭」を指す。
littera の仲間には literal（文字どおりの）・literature（文学）がある。
