覚え方
ラテン語 litterālis（文字の・書き物の） = littera（文字・手紙）+ -ālis（〜に関する）。「文字そのものに関する」が原義で、そこから「書かれた文字どおりの＝比喩ではない」意味になった。
littera からは literature（書かれたもの→文学）・literacy（読み書きの力）・literate（読み書きできる）が並ぶ。liter- を見たら「文字」、-al が付けば「文字に忠実な」。a literal translation は「直訳」、in the literal sense は「文字どおりの意味で」。
綴りは英語で t が一つ（literal）だが、ラテン語では二つ（littera）。英語側で t が減っていると意識しておくと、literature ともども取り違えにくい。
