覚え方
nine（九）+ -th（序数や分数の分母を作る） で「第九の」。中英語 nynthe、さらに古英語 nigon（九）にさかのぼり、綴りは nine の e が落ちて ninth になる。
英語の序数は first・second・third だけが不規則で、fourth 以降は -th が基本。ただし five→fifth、twelve→twelfth、nine→ninth のように語幹が少し変わるものがある。
-th は分数の分母も作り、a ninth は 9 分の 1、two ninths は 9 分の 2。ベートーヴェンの the Ninth（第九）のように作品の番号にも使う。
