offの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 of（〜から） が元で、強く発音される場面で子音が重なり off という別の語に分かれた。今の of（〜の）と off（離れて）は、もともと一つの語。
芯は「くっついていたものが離れる」。take off（外す・離陸する）・turn off（切る＝つながりを断つ）・day off（仕事から離れた日）・10% off（値段から差し引く）まで、すべてこれで説明がつく。
見分け方は綴りがそのまま手がかりになる。f が一つの of は「所属」、f が二つの off は「分離」。発音も of は濁って「オヴ」、off は濁らず「オフ」。
