覚え方

今の of（〜の）と off（離れて）は、もともと古英語 of（〜から）という一つの語で、文中での強さの違いから二つに分かれた。

芯は「くっついていたものが離れる」。take off（外す・離陸する）、turn off（切る＝つながりを断つ）、a day off（仕事から離れた日）、10% off（値段から差し引く）まで、すべてこれで説明がつく。

見分け方は綴りがそのまま手がかりになる。f が一つの of は「所属」、f が二つの off は「分離」と押さえれば、綴りを見て意味を選び分けられる。
