ラテン語 pāgina（書かれた紙葉・ページ）にさかのぼる語。pāgina の背後には *peh₂ǵ-（固定する・留める）があり、蔓を杭に留めるように「文字を並べ留めた面」というのが原義で、形容詞を作る -nus の層を含む。
中世には劇の一場面を書いた台本、さらにその場面を載せて街を引き回す移動舞台を指すようになった。そこから「華やかな野外劇・行列」という現在の意味が育った。
今日いちばん目にするのは a beauty pageant（美人コンテスト）だろう。見せるために組み立てられた華やかな一場面、という感覚が page（ページ）と同じ出どころから来ている。
