pingerの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ping（短く高い音）+ -er（〜する装置・人）。金属を弾いたときのような高く短い音を写した ping が動詞になり、その音を発する装置が pinger。
実際には、水中で一定間隔の信号音を出す装置を指すことが多い。航空機のフライトレコーダーに付く位置発信器が代表例で、事故後に海中から機体を探す手がかりになる。
-er は「〜する人」だけでなく「〜する物」も作る（printer、cooker）。ネットワークで応答時間を測る ping も同じ「短い信号を投げて返りを見る」発想で、音の擬音語から来ている点は共通。
