rehabilitation は、中世ラテン語 rehabilitatio（元の地位に戻すこと）に由来する。奪われた身分や権利を回復させる、という法的な発想が出発点にある。

そこから、けがや病気で失った機能を訓練で取り戻す「リハビリテーション」、また犯罪や依存から立ち直らせる「更生」まで広がった。いずれも「元あった状態へ戻す」という一本の筋でつながっている。

動詞は rehabilitate、日常では rehab と略される。「元の状態への復帰」と押さえれば、医療・司法・建物の改修（rehabilitation of a building）どの文脈でも読み解ける。
