physio-（自然・身体の働き）+ therapy（病気の治療）。運動や徒手、温熱などで体の働きそのものに働きかける治療、つまり理学療法。
physio- は *bʰuH-（なる・生じる）の系統で、physical・physique・physics と同じ。英国では physiotherapy、米国では physical therapy と呼ぶのが普通で、略して physio とも言う。therapy は psychotherapy（精神療法）・chemotherapy（化学療法）のように、手段を表す語と組んで治療法の名を作る。
