古フランス語 reporter（持ち帰る・報告する）から。ラテン語の re-（元へ）+ portō（運ぶ・持って行く）で、「見聞きしたことを元の場所へ運び戻す」が原義。

そこから「報告する・伝える」となり、受け身の reported は「報告された・伝えられている」。reported cases（報告された症例）・reported speech（間接話法）が典型。

portō は export（外へ運ぶ）・import（中へ運ぶ）・transport（越えて運ぶ）・portable（持ち運べる）と同じ。port を見たら「運ぶ」。
