覚え方
ラテン語 scāla（はしご）から。一段ずつ上がる梯子の段が目盛りの一段になり、scale は「尺度・目盛り」、動詞では「よじ登る」。
scaling は図面や画像の縮尺を変えること、また事業や設備の規模を上げ下げすること。scaling up（規模拡大）・scaling down（縮小）の形で使う。
escalator（エスカレーター）・escalate（段階的に上がる）も同じ「はしご」の系統。
