tangential は「枝葉的な・接線方向の」。tangent + -ial（「〜に関する」形容詞を作る）。tangent は *teh₂g-（触れる）に連なり、曲線に一点だけで触れる接線のこと。 接線は触れた瞬間に曲線から離れ、別の方向へ行ってしまう。
