thousand

thousand は古英語 þūsend（千）に由来する。大きな数をひとまとまりとして表す語で、hundred（百）よりさらに十倍大きい単位を指す。

thousand は a thousand（千）や thousands of（何千もの）の形で使う。thousand を見たら「大きなまとまりを数える単位」と捉え、two thousand（2000）・one thousand people（1000人）のように、前に数を置いて数量を組み立てる。
