古英語 ġeard（囲い地・庭・住居）は、囲いで区切られた場所を表す語。語源の *gʰerdʰ-（取り囲む・柵で囲む）から、まず「柵で囲った土地」、そこから「庭」や「住居の敷地」という意味になった。
