古英語 fæþm（広げた両腕・抱擁） から。*peth₂-（広げる） につながり、両腕をいっぱいに広げた幅がこの語の原点である。
その腕の幅を単位にしたのが「尋（ひろ）」で、水深をおよそ 1.8 メートル刻みで測る海事の単位として使われてきた。動詞の fathom はまず「水深を測る」、そこから底まで測る→見抜く・理解するへ広がった。
現在の日常用法はほぼ否定文で、I can't fathom why he left.（なぜ彼が去ったのか見当もつかない）が典型。unfathomable（計り知れない）も同じ流れ。同じ「広げる」の仲間には feather（羽）がある。
