play（遊ぶ）+ ground（地面・場所）。「遊ぶための場所」で、学校や公園の「遊び場・運動場」。ground は古英語 grund から続く語で、「地面」から「〜用の場所」へと意味が広がった。
a school playground（校庭）、a public playground with swings and slides（ブランコや滑り台のある公共の遊び場）のように使う。市の公園整備の案内や不動産広告（near a playground＝遊び場の近く）で出やすい。比喩的に a playground for the rich（富裕層の遊び場＝高級リゾート）とも言う。
ground は campground（キャンプ場）・fairground（催し物会場）と同じ「〜の場所」。〇〇ground＝〇〇する場所と読むとよい。
