覚え方
中期オランダ語 schrabbelen から。scrab + -le（「繰り返し〜する」動詞を作る）という形で、細かい動きを何度も繰り返すことを表す。
英語では手足をばたつかせて掻き集める、必死でかき回して探す、争って奪い合う、といった動きを指し、scrabble around for coins（小銭を探してかき回す）のように使う。
文字タイルを並べる盤上遊戯 Scrabble も同じ語。音も意味も近い scramble（よじ登る・奪い合う）と混同しやすい。
