ラテン語 acquiēscō(休らぐ・静まる)の分詞形 acquiēscēns から。ad(〜へ・〜に向かって)+ quiēscō(休む・静まる) で、「その状態に落ち着く」が原義。
反対もせずに静まったままでいる姿から「黙って従う・黙認する」になった。quiet(静かな)・quit(引き払う)・acquiesce(黙認する)と同族で、「異議を唱えずに静まる」が芯。
補足: 積極的な賛成ではなく、しぶしぶ受け入れる含みがある。an acquiescent smile / acquiescent silence のように、態度や沈黙を形容して使う。
