ラテン語 ācer（属格 ācris、鋭い・辛辣な）から。奥の *h₂eḱ-（鋭い・尖った） がそのまま生きていて、鼻や喉を刺すような「刺激的で苦い」を表す。
acute（鋭い）・acid（酸っぱい）・eager（もとは「鋭い」）と同族で、ac は「鋭い」。焦げた匂いや化学薬品の匂いのように、感覚を突き刺す不快さが中心。
補足: acrid smoke（つんとする煙）・acrid smell のように匂い・味に使い、比喩では acrid remarks（辛辣な発言）と人の言葉にも使う。
