ラテン語 adiacēns（そばに横たわる・隣接する） につながる語。すぐそばに位置していると押さえると意味をつかみやすい。

adjacent は 「隣り合った・すぐ近くの」。near より隣接した位置関係を意識する語だが、物理的に境界が接しているとは限らない。名詞は adjacency（隣接）。

adjacent to the station（駅に隣接して）のように to をとる。数学の adjacent angles（隣接角）、IT のグラフ理論でも「辺でつながっている」意味で使う。
