ギリシャ語 ἀντίπους（足が反対向きの）= ᾰ̓ντῐ-（反対の）+ πούς（足）。地球の裏側の人とは足の裏を向け合っている、という見立てから出た語で、複数形 ἀντίποδες がそのまま英語の antipodes になった。
πούς の語根 *ped-（踏む・歩む）は pedal（足で踏むもの）・pedestrian（歩行者）・octopus（八本足）と同じ。イギリスから見た the Antipodes はオーストラリアとニュージーランドを指す。
