apparelの語源と覚え方

ラテン語 apparō（準備する・整える）= ad-（〜へ）+ parō（準備する・整える）。「その場に合わせて整える」が原義で、そのうち身なりを整える用法が英語に残った。
名詞では「衣服・装い」を指す、やや堅く商業的な語。men's apparel（紳士服）・apparel industry（アパレル産業）のように、店や業界の見出しで clothes の代わりに使われる。動詞「着飾らせる」は文語に残る。
parō の系統には prepare（前もって整える）・repair（整え直す）・separate（分けて整える）がある。par を見たら「整える・そろえる」。日本語の「アパレル」もこの語からで、意味の幅はほぼ同じ。
