フランス語 arbitrage（第三者による争いの裁定）= arbitrer（争いを裁く）+ -age（行為・状態を表す名詞を作る）。原義は「仲裁」。

金融では、同じ商品に付いた複数の市場の値段を見比べて「どちらが正しい値か」を裁くように、安い方で買って高い方で売り、差額を取る取引を指すようになった。日本語訳の「裁定取引」はこの流れをそのまま写している。

arbiter（裁定者）・arbitration（仲裁）と同じ arbitr- は「裁定」の系統。これを行う人は arbitrageur（アービトラージャー）で、発音は「アービトラージ」に近い。
