ラテン語 audītor（聞き手）から。audiō（聞く）+ -tor（〜する人） で、文字どおりは「聞く人」。
会計帳簿を読み上げさせて聞き取り、内容を確かめるという昔のやり方から、「監査する人＝監査人・会計検査官」の意味が定着した。大学で単位を取らずに授業を聴講する人も auditor と呼ぶ。
audit（監査する・聴講する）・audience（聞き手）・auditorium（講堂）が同じ仲間。aud は「聞く」、-tor は「その人」と分けて読めば、監査と聴講という一見離れた意味も一本につながる。
