beholderの語源と覚え方

behold（じっと見る）+ -er（〜する人） で「見る人・観察者」。中英語には biholdere（behalder）の形があり、古英語 behaldan（見守る・眺める）に -ere（動作主をつくる） が付いた作りが見てとれる。
behold の後半 hold は *kel-（駆り立てる）につながり、「視線を留めておく」感覚。頭の be- は *bi-（そばに）。単に目に入っている人ではなく、目を向けて眺めている人が beholder。
実際にはほぼ決まり文句で使う。Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.（美は見る人の目の中にある＝美の基準は人それぞれ）。
