beg（乞う・懇願する）+ -ing（動作を表す名詞を作る語尾） で「物乞い・懇願」。中英語にすでに begging の形がある。
路上で金品を乞う行為そのものを指すほか、形容詞のように使って begging letter（無心の手紙）とも言う。論理学の beg the question は「証明すべき結論を前提に置いてしまう」議論の誤りを指し、日常の「乞う」とは別の使い方。
