biplaneの語源と覚え方
覚え方
bi-(二つの)+ plane(平らな面・翼面)。主翼を上下二枚重ねた飛行機、複葉機。
初期の航空機に多い形式で、一枚なら monoplane(単葉機)、三枚なら triplane。plane はもともと「平らなもの」で、揚力を生む平面としての翼を指す用法から機体そのものの呼び名にもなった。
bi- は *dwi-(二つ・二度)、plane は *pleh₂-(平らな・広い)に遡る。plain(平原・平易な)・plan(平面図→計画)・explain(平らにならす→説明する)と同じで、pla- には「平ら」が入っている。
