blind（目が見えない）+ fell（打ち倒す・打つ） が本来のつくり。「殴って目を見えなくする」が古い意味で、後半が fold（折る・包む）と取り違えられて blindfold の形に落ち着いた。

意味のほうも「布で目をおおう」へ移り、名詞で「目隠し」、動詞で「目隠しをする」。blindfolded は「目隠しされて」から「何も分からない状態で」の比喩にもなる。

blind は *bʰlendʰ-（混ぜる・かすませる）、fell は *h₃elh₁-（滅ぼす・倒れる）にさかのぼる。「視界がぼやける」＋「打ち倒す」の二本立てと見ておくと、綴りの fold が「折る」ではないことも忘れにくい。
