bulbの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 bulbus（球根）から。タマネギやユリのように、地中で丸くふくらんだ茎を指すのが本来の意味である。
そこから「形が似ているもの」へ広がったのが電球で、light bulb は「球根のような形のガラス」。体温計の水銀だまりも bulb と呼ぶ。bulb＝丸くふくらんだ部分と一つの絵で覚えておけば、植物と電気の両方に対応できる。
補足: 形容詞 bulbous（球根状にふくらんだ）。植物では bulb（球根）と seed（種）を区別し、球根植物は bulb plant という。
