bullpenの語源と覚え方

bull（雄牛）+ pen（家畜の囲い）。文字どおり「牛を入れておく囲い」で、筆記具の pen ではなく「囲い」の意味の pen であることに注意。
囲いから「人をまとめて入れておく場所」へ広がったのがこの語の面白さで、野球では控え投手が肩を作って待機する場所（ブルペン）、オフィスでは仕切りのない大部屋の作業スペースを指す。待たされている者たちの囲いというイメージが共通している。
補足: 野球では場所だけでなく、リリーフ投手陣そのものも bullpen と呼ぶ（a strong bullpen＝救援陣が厚い）。
