英語 cheer はラテン語 cara（頭）を受け継いだ語で、さらに「頭・角」を表す印欧祖語の語根にさかのぼる。「頭」を意味した語が、そこに浮かぶ表情を指すようになり、さらに表情に表れる「気分・機嫌」を指すようになったとされる。
「機嫌・気分」という意味から、良い気分を表す「上機嫌」、さらに人を励ますために発する「喝采・声援」という意味に発展し、動詞としても「元気づける・応援する」を表すようになった。
cheer up（元気を出す）や cheerful（陽気な）はこの流れの上にある語。「頭に浮かぶ表情→機嫌→声援」という意味の連鎖で覚えるとよい。
